On March 14, 1962, Gordie Howe of the Detroit Red Wings scored his 500th goal playing against the New York Rangers. This was Howe's 1,045th game. New York Rangers' goalie, Lorne John "Gump" Worsley, was unable to block Howe's shot, resulting in Howe to become the second NHL player to score 500 goals. A 500 goal career was first achieved in 1957-58 when Maurice Richard scored his 500th goal in his 863rd game. The shortest number of NHL games required to reach this mark was 575, set by Wayne Gretzky. The second quickest was Mario Lemieux, achieving his 500th goal in his 605th game.

Throughout his professional ice hockey career, Howe played for the Detroit Red Wings and Hartford Whalers in the NHL and the Houston Aeros and New England Whalers in the WHA. He was often referred to as "Mr. Hockey" and was a four-time Stanley Cup champion with the Red Wings. Howe won six Hart Trophies as the league's most valuable player and six Art Ross Trophies as the leading scorer. He was the recipient of the first NHL Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.
The photo below shows Gordie Howe (#9) scoring his 500th goal as 'Gump' Worsley of the New York Rangers fails to block his shot on March 14, 1962 in New York, NY. The Rangers won this game 3-2.
