On August 29th, 1977, St. Louis Cardinal Lou Brock broke a record that some thought would never be broken. In a game against the Padres at San Diego Stadium, Brock led off the game with a walk. Lou's outfield mate Jerry Mumphrey came to the plate next and Brock wasted no time breaking the "unbreakable". Brock stole second off the Padres battery of P Dave Freisleben and C Dave Roberts, giving him 893 total stolen bases, swiping the record from Ty Cobb. Brock stole another base in the seventh but the Cardinals couldn't get a win as the Padres scored two runs in the bottom of the 8th for a 4 -3 victory.
Lou finished his career in 1979 with 938 stolen bases, a record that he held until it was broken by Rickey Henderson in 1991. Lou still holds the National League stolen base record.
Take a look below at a few of our favorite images of Lou, along with two of the four Brock jerseys that we're proud to make.
Today at Mitchell & Ness we honor Rickey Henderson, who on this day thirty years ago broke the single-season steals record.
Facing the Brewers in Milwaukee, Henderson took a walk against pitcher Doc Medich in the top of the 6th inning. Henderson was on 118 stolen bases, tied with Lou Brock's single season record. Henderson took off that evening in Milwaukee, stealing second base and taking the single-season steals record. In what would become an iconic celebration repeated in his career, Henderson stood up, taking the base out and holding it above his head.
Henderson finished that 1982 season with 130 stolen bases, still the all-time record. No player has gotten close to Henderson's record, with Vince Coleman's 110 stolen bases in 1985 the closest effort. Henderson kept breaking records throughout his career, and is the All-Time leader in career stolen bases, runs scored, and was a first ballot Hall of Famer. Henderson is one of the all time characters in baseball, and before there was "Manny being Manny" there was "Rickey being Rickey."
Mitchell & Ness has had the privilege of signing Rickey Henderson, and will be soon bringing Henderson authentic jerseys to all of you. Have a specific Rickey jersey you want to see us make? Sound off below:
