On This Date In History: May 11, 1972

On this date in history, the Boston Bruins topped the New York Rangers in six games to win their fifth Stanley Cup.  The Bruins skated smoothly through the playoffs, beating the Toronto Maple Leafs in five games and sweeping the St. Louis Blues in four.  Winning the Cup was big, but the real story of these playoffs, and the entire 71 - 72 season, was Bobby Orr.

Orr finished the season with some impressive hardware -  the Hart Memorial Trophy (presented to the regular season MVP) and the James Norris Memorial Trophy (presented to the leagues’s top defenseman.)  Number 4's dominance continued into the playoffs, setting the NHL record for playoff assists with 19 and for playoff points by a defenseman with 24.  Needless to say, the Conn Smythe Trophy (presented to the playoff MVP) was Orr’s too.

Quite a year for the Bruins and their legendary defenseman.  Think Beantown raised a few of these in his honor?
