The Hammer Enters the Hall

Last night at the Flyers game one of our favorite Flyers was inducted into the Hall of Fame.  Dave "The Hammer" Schultz took his rightful place among teammates Bernie Parent, Bob Clarke, Rick MacLeish and Bill Barber.  We love Dave for a number of reasons - his style of play, his role in two consecutive Stanley Cups, his mustache, the song "Penalty Box" and maybe, most of all, his love of the Flyers and their fans.

One of our favortie Schultz memories took place just a few years ago.  He was in the office and was loaning us one of his jerseys for us to re-create.  We looked at it and noticed the large amount of blood that was all over the front. From the looks on our faces he could tell that we were shocked that someone had inflicted so much damage to one of our heroes . He immediately responded with, "don't worry about it, none of it's mine."

Check out the link below for a highlight reel of Dave's career and to watch his speech from last night.

As Flyers fans he's definitely our favorite NHL enforcer.  Who's yours?

On This Date In History: May 19, 1974

On May 19, 1974, the Philadelphia Flyers won their first Stanley Cup.  In a six game series they topped the Bobby Orr led Boston Bruins.  The video clip below really says it all.

The 1973 - 74 season was a special one for the Flyers. Their first Cup was won with a lot of skill, perseverance and toughness (you've heard of the Broad Street Bullies, right?)  But there was another contributor to their success that you may not know about.

In 1969 the Flyers started playing Kate Smith's rendition of God Bless America before some of their most important games.  On those nights the Flyers seemed to win more than they lost. So, on October 11 1973, at the home opener, the Flyers brought in their singing good luck charm.  The Flyers won. Kate was brought in a second time on May 19, 1974.

You know what happened that night.

The Flyers continue  to keep this tradition alive.  Before big games these days they combine clips of Kate with a live performance by current Flyers pre-game performer, Lauren Hart.

We love the way the Flyers celebrate both their past and present.  And we're not just saying that because they're our hometown team.

Does your team do a good job of keeping their history alive?  Let us know about it.

Mayor Dave Bing

Congratulations to new Detroit Mayor, and former Detroit Piston, Dave Bing.  Let's hope he can make a difference in a great but struggling city.

With his election, and the recent election of Kevin Johnson as mayor of Sacramento, the conversation around the office this morning is about what former athlete would we like to see as mayor of Philadelphia.  We've decided on Dave "The Hammer" Schultz.  No explanation necessary.

How about you?  What former athlete would you like to see in charge of your city?
