With the 1st pick in the 2011 NFL Draft...

That is how Commissioner Goodell was received by the fans at the 2011 NFL Draft last night. And not just for the opening speech. He was booed every time he approached the podium to announce the next pick. Ouch…

Aside from the booing, there were plenty of surprises in this year’s draft. Cam Newton was taken 1st overall by the Panthers and became the 11th QB taken first overall in the last 14 years. When the Panthers, Titans and Jaguars all drafted quarterbacks last night, it became the first time since 1999 that three quarterbacks were taken in the top ten of the draft.

Da’Quan Bowers, who was once projected as the best defensive end in the draft, managed not to get drafted on day 1 (8 other DEs have been drafted ahead of him so far). Overall, 24 of the first 32 picks in the draft were non-skill positions, and the offensive position picks/defensive position picks split was exactly 16/16.

The Atlanta Falcons traded away its 2011 1st round pick, its 2011 2nd round pick, its 2011 4th round pick, its 2012 1st round pick and its 2012 4th round pick to move up from 27th to 6th and select wide receiver Julio Jones out of the University of Alabama. Again, that is two 1st round picks, a 2nd round pick and two 4th round picks. Why is that a surprise? Because in 2010, Falcons wide receiver Roddy White lead the league in receptions, lead the league in targets, was 2nd in total receiving yards and lead the league in receiving first downs. That's a lot of picks for position you already have filled…

Day 2 stands to be full of just as many twists and turns as teams make their 2nd through 7th round selections.
