2012 NHL Draft

The 2012 NHL draft took place over the weekend at Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, PA. Even though 211 prospects were taken in this year’s draft, the headlines of the draft seemed to be about what the teams were doing with their current rosters. What do you think the biggest story line was from this year’s 2012 draft?

A) The Edmonton Oilers draft forward Nail Yakupov with their third consecutive 1st overall pick.

B) The Pittsburgh Penguins trade center Jordan Staal to the Carolina Hurricanes (whose Captain is Eric Staal, Jordan’s older brother) in exchange for center Brandon Sutter, defenseman Brian Dumoulin and the 8th overall pick in the 2012 draft, defenseman Derrick Pouliot. Extra note - Jordan Staal was in the process of getting married when he was trade to the ‘Canes.

C) The Philadelphia Flyers trade winger James Van Riemsdyk to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for defenseman Luke Schenn (whose younger brother, Brayden Schenn, plays for Flyers).

D) The Boston Bruins draft goalie Malcolm Subban, younger brother to division rival P.K. Subban of the Montreal Canadiens.

E) Your Pick.

Happy Anniversary L.A.

Today marks the 44th anniversary of the Los Angeles Kings’ first game. Before the 1967-1968 NHL season started, the league decided it was time for expansion. Six franchises were awarded before the season, the California Seals, Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, Minnesota North Stars, St. Louis Blues and Los Angeles Kings. On October 14th, 1967, the Kings opened up their inaugural season at Long Beach Arena with a game against another expansion team, the Philadelphia Flyers. In front of their home crowd, the Kings went on to beat the Flyers 4-2. The Kings would finish their first season in 2nd place in the West Division, but wouldn’t make it out of the first round of the playoffs.

Ironically enough, the Los Angeles Kings, and former Flyer Captain Mike Richards, are facing off against the Philadelphia Flyers tomorrow night. But unlike 44 years ago, this game will take place at the Wells Fargo Center in South Philadelphia. The undefeated Flyers look to give Philly sports fans a much needed morale boost tomorrow night, but history may stand with the Kings…
