Wild Card Weekend Wrap Up

Heading into the Wild Card weekend…

 ·  The top six teams with the most playoff berths since 2000 were all in the playoffs:  Indianapolis (10), Philadelphia (9), New England (8), Baltimore (7), Green Bay (7) and Pittsburgh (7).

·  A team (Kansas City) went from worst to first in its division for a record eighth consecutive season.

·  Aaron Rodgers threw for 423 yards and four TDs in the Pack’s playoff loss last year against Arizona.

After the Wild Card...

 ·  The upset:  For the first time in NFL history, a team with a losing record won a playoff game.  The 7-9 Seattle Seahawks stunned the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints in a shootout, 41-36.

·  The nail-biter:  The Jets and Colts traded leads throughout the fourth quarter until a Jets field goal won the game as time expired.

·  The blowout:  The Ravens were dominant in three out of the four quarters to top the Chiefs 30-7.

·  The near come-back:  Mike Vick nearly led the Birds to a fourth quarter comeback, but fell short to the Pack, 21-16.

Teams are preparing for what another exciting weekend of football.  Do you have the best gear to support your team?

History in the Making...maybe

As you are well aware, around here, we get our kicks from celebrating sports history and the players and teams that make it.  But, we might, however, enjoy just a little bit more…watching history be made.   Having said that, we are holding our breath in anticipation for Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals between the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers tonight in Boston.

If the Flyers come out on top, they will become just the fourth professional sports team to come back from a 3-0 series deficit and win a 7-game series.  Should this feat occur, they will join the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs, the 1975 New York Islanders and the 2004 Boston Red Sox .

So, the question is…will Mitchell & Ness bloggers be writing about ‘this date in history’ 10, 15 or 20 years from now?  We sure hope so.

What do you think?

Oh, Canada!

The Mitchell & Ness office is buzzing about the excitement brought by the NHL playoffs right now. Last night, the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Washington Capitals in game 7 to became the first No. 8 team to come back from a 3-1 series deficit to knock off a No. 1 team since the NHL adopted its new playoff format in 1994. Next up for the Habs are the defending Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins.

One M&N staffer even yelled, 'Go Habs', as he walked in this morning, not because he is a Canadiens fan, but because the outcome of last night's game determined the Flyers' opponent for the Conference Semifinals...the rival Boston Bruins. These two teams have not met in the postseason since 1978 when the Bruins defeated the Flyers in five games.  Four years prior, the Flyers upset the Bruins in the 1974 Finals and went on to win the Stanley Cup. Obviously, we are hoping for a repeat of '74...
