On This Date In History: Super Bowl X

On January 18, 1976, Super Bowl X was played at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida.  The Pittsburgh Steelers made their second consecutive appearance season finale, lining up against the Dallas Cowboys.  The boys from Texas went into the half with a 10 - 7 lead courtesy of a Roger Staubach to Drew Pearson 29 yard td pass and a 36 yard field goal by kicker Toni Fritsch.

The third quarter was scoreless so the game came down to the fourth and final fifteen minutes.  Steeler Reggie Harrison blocked a punt through the end zone for a safety and kicker Roy Gerela connected on two field goals for a 15 - 10 Steeler lead.  Steeler QB Terry Bradshaw connected with Lynn Swann, the eventual SB X MVP, on a 64 yard bomb to increase the lead to 21 - 10 (the extra point failed.)  Dallas scored on a 34 yard td pass to Percy Howard, Howard's only reception of his NFL career.

On Pittsburgh's final drive of the game, they had to punt and gave the ball to the Cowboys on their 39 yard line with 1:22 to play.  Staubach ran and threw for two first downs.  The Cowboys were on the move but time was running out.  On a last gasp desperation pass Staubach threw the ball into the end zone where it was picked off by Glen Edwards.  Game over.  Super Bowl X to the Steelers.
