The 2012 NHL draft took place over the weekend at Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, PA. Even though 211 prospects were taken in this year’s draft, the headlines of the draft seemed to be about what the teams were doing with their current rosters. What do you think the biggest story line was from this year’s 2012 draft?
A) The Edmonton Oilers draft forward Nail Yakupov with their third consecutive 1st overall pick.
B) The Pittsburgh Penguins trade center Jordan Staal to the Carolina Hurricanes (whose Captain is Eric Staal, Jordan’s older brother) in exchange for center Brandon Sutter, defenseman Brian Dumoulin and the 8th overall pick in the 2012 draft, defenseman Derrick Pouliot. Extra note - Jordan Staal was in the process of getting married when he was trade to the ‘Canes.
C) The Philadelphia Flyers trade winger James Van Riemsdyk to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for defenseman Luke Schenn (whose younger brother, Brayden Schenn, plays for Flyers).
D) The Boston Bruins draft goalie Malcolm Subban, younger brother to division rival P.K. Subban of the Montreal Canadiens.
E) Your Pick.
Congratulations to the Los Angeles Kings for winning the 2011-2012 Stanley Cup! The Kings defeated the New Jersey Devils 6-1 in their Cup clinching victory last night (the series finished 4-2). In route to the franchise's first Stanley Cup, the Kings went 16-4 for the playoffs and only lost 1 road game. Kings goalie Jonathan Quick won the Conn Smythe Trophy for the playoff MVP, and Captain Dustin Brown became only the 2nd American born Captain to hoist the Stanley Cup. Congrats again to the L.A. Kings!
In Philly for the Penn Relays, or for any other reason this weekend? If so, stop by and see us at 1201 Chestnut Street.
Hunter Pence has quickly become a Philly fan favorite after arriving just a short time ago. He was a perfect choice for this town filled with emotionally driven sports fans. He has brought an energy and excitement back to this team that brings back memories of the ever illustrious 2008 team that brought home the title.
We are so excited to see him on the new cover of Philadelphia Magazine in our Philadelphia Phillies jersey pictured above! This piece from 1900 is a perfect fit for the athlete who mirrors the image of a past-time player, exuding the likeness of past legends Ty Cobb, Shoeless Joe Jackson, Honus Wagner & Walter Johnson, to name a few.
