The University of Kentucky basketball uniforms were inspired by Secretariat, the record-breaking American Thoroughbred racehorse, that in 1973 became the first U.S Triple Crown Champion in 25 years. The university's uniform inspiration specifically comes from the Thoroughbred's headdress and his jockey's blue and white checkered patterned racing silks.

The center front waistband of the Kentucky shorts have a similar blue and white checkered design which includes the Wildcats championship years. This checkered pattern can also been seen in a subtle, tonal pattern on their jerseys. In addition, the rose pattern on their jerseys symbolizes the Kentucky Derby. Also, we're sure it's not a coincidence that the University of Kentucky's campus is located in the city of Lexington, known as the "Thoroughbred City" and the "Horse Capital of the World."  Pretty cool, huh?
