Today marks the birthday of NHL great Gordie Howe. Born in 1928 in Floral, Saskatchewan, Mr. Hockey’s played professional hockey from the age of 18 to the young age of 52 (an NHL record). Howe was an incredible playmaker and goal scorer throughout his career, ranking in the league's top 5 of scoring for 20 consecutive seasons. To this day, he still holds every NHL regular season scoring record for a right winger by notching 801 goals, 1,049 assists and 1,850 total points over the course of his amazing 34 year career. Despite being one of the leagues greatest all time scorers, Howe was equally well known for his willingness to drop the gloves. His style of play inspired the phrase “Gordie Howe Hat Trick,” which refers to a player getting a goal, an assist and a fight in the same game.
Elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972, Howe collected quite a few accolades of the course of his career. Most notably, Howe was a 23 time NHL All-Star, a 2 time WHA All-Star, a 6 time Art Ross Trophy (given to the player who leads the lead in scoring at the end of the regular season) winner, a 6 Hart Trophy (given to the league MVP) winner and a 4 time Stanley Cup Champion (winning in 1950, 1952, 1954 & 1955 all with the Detroit Red Wings).
Happy 82nd Birthday Mr. Hockey!
