Let's Talk Steelers

The Steelers are in the big game this Sunday. So, here is some Steelers trivia for you to use to impress friends and family.  Calm down Packer fans, yours is coming soon.

  • Former Steelers DE Ernie Stautner is the only Steeler to have his number retired.  His # 70 was retired on October 25, 1964.


  • Chuck Noll became the head coach of the Steelers on January 27, 1969.  With his first draft pick he selected DT Joe Greene.


  • The Steelers are the fifth oldest franchise in the NFL.  They were founded on July 8, 1933 by Art Rooney.

  • The Steelers were originally called the Pittsburgh Pirates.  They became the Steelers in 1940.
  • In 1984 Tony Dungy was named defensive coordinator of the Steelers, becoming the NFL's first African American coordinator.  Dungy was a DB for the Steelers from 1977 - 78.

  • Only one Steeler has ever worn 00.  It was worn by Johnny Clement, who played for the Steelers from 1946 - 48.  Clement also wore 0 for awhile.


  • Art Rooney signed Byron "Whizzer" White to an unheard of $15,800 contract in 1938, making White the first big money player in the NFL.  After his playing career White served 31years as a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.


  • The Steelers first playoff win came on December 23, 1972 against the Oakland Raiders.  The game became known for Franco Harris' "Immaculate Reception."


  • The Steelers first winning season came in 1942 when the team finished with a 7 - 4 record.
  • The three marks in the Steelers logo are often called diamonds.  Officially, they should be referred to as hypocycloids.


  • The Steelers are the only team that wears their logo on only one side of their helmet.  This was originally done because they weren't sure if they would like the look of the logo on the helmet.
