Today at Mitchell & Ness we honor Rickey Henderson, who on this day thirty years ago broke the single-season steals record.
Facing the Brewers in Milwaukee, Henderson took a walk against pitcher Doc Medich in the top of the 6th inning. Henderson was on 118 stolen bases, tied with Lou Brock's single season record. Henderson took off that evening in Milwaukee, stealing second base and taking the single-season steals record. In what would become an iconic celebration repeated in his career, Henderson stood up, taking the base out and holding it above his head.
Henderson finished that 1982 season with 130 stolen bases, still the all-time record. No player has gotten close to Henderson's record, with Vince Coleman's 110 stolen bases in 1985 the closest effort. Henderson kept breaking records throughout his career, and is the All-Time leader in career stolen bases, runs scored, and was a first ballot Hall of Famer. Henderson is one of the all time characters in baseball, and before there was "Manny being Manny" there was "Rickey being Rickey."
Mitchell & Ness has had the privilege of signing Rickey Henderson, and will be soon bringing Henderson authentic jerseys to all of you. Have a specific Rickey jersey you want to see us make? Sound off below:
