On November 9, 1972, John Bucyk, left winger for the Boston Bruins, scored his 1,000th point. Bucyk retired as the leading career point scorer among left wings, a record surpassed by Luc Robitaille. Although he had a reputation for some harsh hip checks, Bucyk was a notably clean player who won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for sportsmanship in 1971 and 1974. Bucyk was induced into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1981.
